Professor Jill Howieson

Understanding Narcissistic Patterns to Strengthen Family Report Writing

In this practical and insightful session, Jill Howieson draws on her expertise in psychology and interpersonal dynamics to explore how narcissistic personality patterns can present in family law contexts, and what that means for high-quality, defensible family reports.

Clinicians will learn how to recognise underlying patterns of self-regulation, interpersonal presentation, and relational strategy that often accompany narcissistic traits, and how to translate these observations into clear, clinically sound formulations.

The talk will include concrete guidance on assessment, language choices, risk formulation, and maintaining impartiality — all designed to support report writers in producing robust findings that hold up under scrutiny.

The Family Report Writers Network is Australia’s dedicated hub for Family Report Writers. We provide connection, resources, professional development, and peer support to psychologists and social workers working in family law. Our mission is to strengthen practice, reduce isolation, and promote excellence in this complex and challenging field.
