Peer Discussion: Parental Insight — What Does It Actually Look Like?

Peer Discussion: Parental Insight — What Does It Actually Look Like?

“Limited insight” is one of the most frequently used - and least defined - phrases in Family Reports.

But what do we actually mean when we write it?

Is insight about remorse? Self-awareness? Behavioural change? Reflective capacity? And how much insight is truly required for adequate parenting?

In this FRWN peer discussion, we will unpack the construct of parental insight and explore how to operationalise it in a way that is clinically rigorous and forensically defensible. We’ll examine the difference between emotional expression and genuine reflective capacity, consider whether litigation stress distorts presentation, and debate whether we sometimes apply therapeutic ideals that exceed the threshold for “good enough” parenting.

This is not a formal presentation - it is a peer led discussion that will aim to be reflective and collegial space. The session will be confidential and not recorded.

The Family Report Writers Network is Australia’s dedicated hub for Family Report Writers. We provide connection, resources, professional development, and peer support to psychologists and social workers working in family law. Our mission is to strengthen practice, reduce isolation, and promote excellence in this complex and challenging field.
